Welcome

Begun in 1969, the photographs held by the Ryerson Image Centre in the Peter Higdon Research Centre comprise a collection unique to Canada. This resource, currently numbering close to 300,000 photographs, offers researchers the vital experience of studying original prints by photographers of international status. The RIC's longstanding culture of collection and connoisseurship provided the physical and intellectual infrastructure that led to the successful acquisition in 2005 of the Black Star Collection. Further recent acquisitions include the comprehensive archives of noted photographer Wendy Snyder MacNeil, Black Star photographer Werner Wolff, British feminist artist Jo Spence and the famous photographer Berenice Abbot.

To make the collection more accessible, the RIC is digitizing collection items and putting this information online. As we are constantly adding new information, the database is a living, changing entity. We add new records and enrich current records on a constant basis. Our documentation has been created through research and contributions by staff, visiting scholars, artists, and curators.
