Recto, [no inscription]; Verso, handwritten: [in graphite] II/2 Photographing France Under Hitler / 2 W.W. / France; stamped and handwritten: [in black ink] Credit: [black star] / Paula Le Cler / from BLACK STAR / GRAYBAR BUILDING NEW YORK; typed: [in black ink on paper adhered with tape] LOT II - 2. / In this homemade cart run on a pair of old bicycle wheels, this Marseille girl looks / as if she might be participating in presentday [sic] France's perpetual daily salvage hunt / for the home front, against freezing and total starvation. In that case the big sturdy sack in itself would be a most rarely valuable acquisition. But sack and bound boxes / are too valuable to be merely scrap. More probably this is a whole business set-up being transported. Her set face shows her conciousness of important responsibility: / as present-day possessions go, the pushcart and its contents put her in the capitalist / class.
