Captions: Verso: Rainbow Corner closes down ? Police rush to control street crowds. A seething crowd filled the streets outside Rainbow Corner, as the famous American Red Cross Club, for three years the ?home from Home? of so many GIs [Government Issues] in Europe, closed its doors for the last time. Shaftesbury Avenue soon became impassable to traffic and women fainted among the press of crowds in the street, as police were rushed to the spot to control the mob which forced its way into the Club. The locking ceremony was carried out by Mrs. Rebecca Hamilton, Director of the Club, with a specially made steel key and the doors were forced shut by GIs [Government Issues] just long enough to allow her to turn the key. Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and Mr. Anthony Eden were among the guests of honour who broadcast to America, sending greetings and messages, at the farewell party of the Rainbow Corner.
