Advertising throughout / the city extends from simple wall painting to expensive / steel signs such as the one in the background of this / picture. In the foreground is a window box of the “Welt / illustrustrierte”. A Commie picture magazine, and a show / case of the Soviet Information Center.; handwritten: Black Star; typed label: PREPARATIONS FOR COMMIE-SPONSORED PEACE CONGRESS / HELD IN VIENNA FROM DECEMBER 12 – 19, 1952. / Through every propaganda media of the Russians, plus / those of the Communist Party in Austria, the theme of / peace and its availability through the efforts of the / coming peace conference was given maximum saturation. / The Communists’ eight daily newspapers in Austria, their / 800 reading-rooms, posters, radio station and neighbor- / hood Communist headquarters pounded the theme to an / extent that would put Coca-Cola to shame. In the sectors / of Vienna controlled by the British, French and Americans / they were careful to attempt to appeal to all people / interested in peace. But in the Russian Zone the tie-up / between the peace drive and “Hate America” becomes more / apparent.
