Recto, [no inscription]; Verso, typed: NATO – 25 Years of Security / Except as part of a whole there is no air defence of / any one nation. Missiles and supersonic aircraft fly / so fast and so far that they must be detected far out / and far up beyond national frontiers if they are to be / dealt with in time and the risk of surprise attack / reduced. NATO had only one choice jointly to finance / and build a standardized system for Europe as a whole / that took no account of national frontiers and / previous national systems. It should not only give / early warning time but by relying on computers enable / the whole range of air defence weapons to be put / into operation in a matter of seconds. It is the / largest common defence project ever undertaken by NATO in its 25 year search for security. It is known / as NADGE – NATO Air Defence Ground Environment. / Similar systems existed in North American and in / Britain so that watch is now kept over the whole of / the NATO defence area. In Europe there are 84 NADGE / installations in 9 NATO countries stretching from / Norway’s common frontier with the Soviet Union through / Denmark and the central region and across the Alps to / Italy, Greece and Turkey. This incredibly complex / network of radars, computers and other modern / electronic wonders makes it possible in micro-seconds / to detect, indentify and if necessary intercept any / aircraft approaching NATO’s air-space in Europe. / This photo is NATO copyright and if it / is published please credit “NATO PHOTO” / and send a copy of the publication to: / Bureau Photo Nb 112, / OTAN//NATO, / 1110 Brussels, Belgium; stamped: [star shape] / Credit: / from BLACK STAR
