From a small initial network / linking the Military Commands only, the systems / have been progressively expanded to provide / facilities for all NATO’s communications needs - / both civil and military. The search for ever / more reliable and speedy communications led / NATO to invest collectively in the most modern / means of transmission – the satellite. By / early 1972, NATO’s SATCOM system of two / satellites with twelve ground terminals / provided coverage extending over the entire / defence area of the Alliance. Since 1968 all / capitals, major Military Commands, and NATO / Headquarters in Brussels have been linked / by a network of secure teleprinter lines known / as NATOWIDE.
