From a small initial network / linking the Military Commands only, the systems / have been progressively expanded to provide / facilities for all NATO’s communications needs - / both civil and military. The search for ever / more reliable and speedy communications led / NATO to invest collectively in the most modern / means of transmission – the satellite. By early 1972, NATO’s SATCOM system of two / satellites with twelve ground terminals (thick / lines) provided coverage extending over the / entire defence area of the Alliance. Since / 1968 all capitals, major Military Commands, / and NATO headquarters in Brussels have been / linked by a network of secure teleprinter / lines known as NATOWIDE (thin lines). / Eventually, all NATO’s communications will be / absorbed into one automatically switched / grid-type network to be called NICS – the / NATO Integrated Communications System. / This photo is NATO copyright and if it is / published please credit NATO PHOTO and / send a copy of the publication to: / Photo Bureau / OTAN//NATO, / 1110 Brussels, Belgium.; stamped: [star shape] / Credit: / from BLACK STAR
