NOVAK; handwritten: No 361; typed sheet: Copyright Czechopress, Prague II, Narodni 10. / The conference of the Jewish World Congress in Prague / 23-29.4.47 / Prague the capital of Czechoslovakia saw these days representatives of 18 states who came to take part in the European conference of the / Jewish World Congress. England, Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland, France, Italy, / Yugoslavia, Hungary, Poland, Portrugal, Austria, Roumania, Greece, the USA / Russia, Sweden and Switzerland were represented on this first post war / conference of the biggest non-political organization of world Jewery, / which has branches in 53 states all over the world, wherever Jews live. / Already after the first world war attempts were made to create a body / representing internationally the interests of world Jewery. But only in / 1938 these attempts were finally crowned by success. The war justified / amply the creation of this body. They helped Jews to escape from Nazi / occupied Europe, they prevented mass deportations of Jews from Bulgaria, / came to an agreement on the immigration of Danish Jews into Sweden and / organised care parcels to inmates of concentration camps. It became in fact the mouthpiece of Jewery wherever its interests were at stake. / The United Nations recognised the work and the value of the Congress / and asked their advice in all question regarding Jewish problems when / peace treaties were discussed with the German satellite states. Dr. / Stephen Wise, an American is the chairman of this organization which / has political organizational, legal and cultural committees. / The congress at Prague is mainly dealing with relations to the UNO / demands for equal rights for Jews in the peace treaties with Germany and / Austria, the creation of an international organization for refugees, and / co-operation with anti-fascist committee in Russia, are the most / noteworthy among them. A proposition has been moved to create a permanent / European Office in Prague, and the members from the Balkan states are / even proposing to make Prague the permanent seat of the Organisation it- / self, a choice which is favoured by the fact that Prague is the link / between the East and West. Attendants to this congress who came from all / parts of the world and had an opportunity to see with their own eyes how [crossed out] / true the statement of the iron curtain is, and how favourable the situ- / ation of the Jews in Czechoslovakia compares with the situation of Jews / in other parts of the world. All participants of the congress are taking / part in excursions which take them to all parts of the country to give / them an opportunity to study the situation on whichever spot of the re- / public they like.
