It is a city which combines / the charm and leisure of the 17th and 18th century with the stir / and the activity of a modern capital. At the time of the Austrian / Empire Prague was a provincial capital where the Czech nobility / lived in a semi-exile, an exile made bearable by the beauty of / their palaces and the art life of which Prague always was abun- / dant. The creation of the Czechoslovak republic in 1918 trans- / formed the sleepy provincial town into a gleaming and glittering / capital where modern buildings grew like mushrooms after rain. / The war, and the German occupation brought the growth of the city / to a temporary standstill, but left Prague as a whole intact. / Today it is the only capital in Central Europe show [sic] again the / image of peace and order, where life is normal the foreign visitor / finds proof that the democratic spirit of the nation has not / changed, and strives to re-gain and even surpass it’s [sic] pre-war / standard. / The picture shows: The palaces of the Czech nobility now serve as seats / of Government offices and foreign legations. Surrounded by high walls / they give the city an air of romance and peace.; handwritten: 25
